If you’re like me, you’re always running around, and even when you’re sitting down to “relax,” you’re checking email or a website or an article. I have a hard time even properly sitting down for a show anymore without having my computer near me or some other distraction like Gems with Friends within arm’s reach. I’m thinking, boy, can I get a lot done in a day! Yet in all my multi-tasking, am I really being as productive as I think I am?

We’ve all heard about the value of meditation and mindfulness – but does it actually help? Studies have consistently agreed upon the answer: Yes.

Meditation is not just for hemp-wearing vegans (not that there is ANYTHING wrong with that, but we all have heard the stereotype), but for some of the most highly successful and productive people: Def Jam founder Russell Simmons, Legal Seafoods CEO Roger Berkowitz, Tupperware CEO Rick Goings, just to name a few. Green Mountain founder Robert Stiller even brought the practice to his entire company.

Doing nothing, meditating, being mindful not only helps to reduce stress, but has also been found to:

  • Increase focus
  • Increase creativity
  • Improve memory
  • Improve mood
  • Increase productivity.

Former monk Andy Puddicombe gave a terrific 10-minute TedX talk about how doing nothing for 10 minutes a day can drastically improve your life and work.
